When makelovenotporn.com resonated so strongly all around the world that I felt a personal responsibility to develop it into something more far-reaching, I turned it into a business – in line with my belief that the future of business is about doing good and making money simultaneously.

But also because the only way we can hope to scale to achieve our social mission of creating a more open, honest, healthy attitude to and dialogue around #realworldsex, is by building a business with the ability to sustain itself – which is why we have our revenue-sharing business model.

“Because of my work and how outspoken I am, people get the impression that I have a great deal more sex than I actually do. The opportunities are there but, depressingly, due to both my travel schedule and my work, I’m not often able to meet up with the young gentlemen in question – so the last time I had sex was several months ago.

I meet the men I date on cougar dating sites. I applaud the rise of the niche dating site, by the way – everybody knows exactly why they’re there. This was a young man I had met online several years ago; he had come to New York on vacation, and proposed meeting up, which I was totally on for. Whilst I want them, I don’t currently have children.

I also won’t claim to know anything about parenting.

However, I worked on the NSPCC account a few years ago and most of the projects were to do with keeping children safe online.

So, I know a little bit about how children come into contact with pornography.

And I know that if you have children, they will watch porn eventually. Sorry, proud parents.

They will watch it either by intentionally seeking it out, being exposed to it by a friend or stumbling across it through what they deem to be innocent search terms.

(The words Doggy and Cowgirl mean very different things to your kids than they do to you).

Context set

If you’re over 40, you probably had to work a bit harder to see pornography growing up.

The resident ‘older, cooler student’ at school might have shown those who asked nicely the stash of photos they kept in the boot of their freshly-spoiler’d hatchback.

Your friend might have shown you a video from the ‘special suitcase’ his dad kept in the loft.

Or you might stumble across a secret stash of magazines in the local wood.

If you’re nearer 30, it was a bit easier. There was normally someone in school who was happy to Bluetooth you ‘something gross’ that they had on their phone. The quality was bad, but to your young eyes and mind, the content was always very interesting indeed.

Fast forward

Now, graphic, violent and hardcore pornography is literally two words away. For example:

Red Tube.

You Porn.

Both of which conveniently borrow close to 50% of their name from the world’s most popular video sharing platform. This is a platform children engage with a lot.

I’ve pasted below some titles of videos trending on the homepages of these two websites.

Bear in mind, these videos are free to watch with just one click.

These sites also make money by advertising paid pornography sites, which can be very niche indeed.

(I’ve kept all spelling, casing and grammar as it appears on the site).

Don’t just take it from these absurd titles, porn is doing damage.

The reality is, almost every adult indulges in some form of erotic content.

Those who claim they don’t are pesky little liars.

So, I’m not here to attack porn or make anyone feel bad for watching it. It’s not about being anti-porn.

It’s about making sure children are being taught the difference between porn and sex.

Because it’s a bit like the difference a British bar fight and professional wrestling.

Children are very absorbent sponges.

Naively assuming that your children aren’t going to watch porn is very dangerous indeed. They will.

Not only that, but it will shape their cues and expectations of:

-What consent should look like

-What sex should look like

-What sex should sound like

-What sex should feel like

-How sex should be enjoyed

(most porn teaches that if you’re not recreating Beethoven with your groans, grunts and screams then you’re doing something wrong.)

-Who they should have sex with

 How many people they should have sex with

 -How they should treat others during sex

-How they should let others treat them during sex

-What their body should look like

-How big things should be

-How small things should be

-What colour things should be

-What shape things should be

Most children start seeing pornography around aged 11.

Do you really want your children to spend the better part of ten years taking their cues from graphic, violent and hardcore pornography?

To me, that’s like showing them the film Speed and telling them it’s how you catch a bus.

Which is why, when that time comes, I will buy my children a subscription to MakeLoveNotPorn.
